It's my first summer back in Texas, and these bugs have me dreaming of moving back to Colorado. Seriously, the number of bugs I see on a daily basis is just unreal. And a few sneaky little ants and spiders have made their way into my home in search of food, water and cooler temperatures. Usually before I call in the big guns (Terminix), I like to try an all natural alternative. The method that you're going to read about is something that I've had success with in the past. I'm crossing my fingers it'll do the trick this time around!
Mix Up a Natural Bug Repellent for Your Home
- Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water
- Add 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil
- Add 5-10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- Shake well
This mixture works because ants communicate though scent trails. The strong aroma from this mixture masks the scent trails and interrupts the ants' ability to "talk" to each other. As for spiders, they are simple creatures. They just hate the smell of vinegar, peppermint and eucalyptus.
Spray the Mixture on All Entry Ways
Now that you’ve made the bug repellent, you’re gonna want to spray the mixture on all the entry ways of your home, like your doors and windows. Essential oils are effective for deterring bugs. However, keep in mind that an essential oil mixture application doesn’t last as long as an exterminator treatment. So, be sure to re-spray your home regularly.
Place Peppermint Scented Cotton Balls Around Your Home
Where are most of the bugs gathering? Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a cotton ball and place in the trouble areas of your home. Replace the peppermint scented cotton ball every week or so.
I hope this easy and natural method keeps for your home bug free this summer!
